Blue Sky Monument 2020

The first Covid-related lockdown in spring 2020 caused several turbulences in the global media coverage, with new stories coming thick and fast. But in the skies, it was the opposite: the combination of greatly reduced air traffic due to the global lockdown and a highly unusual weather constellation created a brilliant blue, undisturbed in any way. This was the period during which Judith Huemer compiled a collection of photographs of the ‘blue sky over Vienna’. The artist’s own photographs were complemented by others from colleagues in Austria and abroad. Blue Sky Monument is the title the artist gave this collection of images, all taken using mobile phones.
Snapshots of the sky in various shades of blue are evocative of the global state of emergency. In their poetic and contemplative reduction lies the power needed to reflect on the turbo-capitalism of our age. The artist also designed a poster featuring a collage of photographs, for visitors to take home. Thus, Judith Huemer’s Blue Sky Monument has acquired a sphere of influence independent of its actual location. As the stacked height of this compact block steadily decreases within the exhibition space, the ‘sky monument’ spreads ever further afield in the public and private space.

Der erste coronabedingte Lockdown im Frühjahr 2020 führte zu größten Turbulenzen in der weltweiten medialen Berichterstattung, Nachrichten überschlugen sich. Am Himmel geschah das Gegenteil: Der während des globalen Lockdowns stark reduzierte Flugverkehr und eine außergewöhnliche Wetterkonstellation führten zu einem strahlenden Blau, ohne jegliche Irritation. Während dieser Zeit legte Judith Huemer eine Sammlung mit Aufnahmen vom „blauen Himmel über Wien“ an. Zu den Fotografien der Künstlerin kamen weitere von Kolleg*innen aus dem In- und Ausland hinzu: Dieser Bildersammlung, alle mit Mobiltelefonen aufgenommen, gab die Künstlerin den Titel Blue Sky Monument.
Momentaufnahmen des Himmels in Variationen von Blautönen erinnern an den globalen Ausnahmezustand. In ihrer poetischen und kontemplativen Reduktion liegt die Kraft, über den Turbokapitalismus unserer Zeit nachzudenken. Eine Collage verschiedener Aufnahmen hat die Künstlerin als Plakat zum Mitnehmen konzipiert. So gewinnt Judith Huemers „Monument des blauen Himmels“ einen ortsunabhängigen Wirkungskreis. Während die Stapelhöhe des kompakten Blocks im Ausstellungsraum stetig abnimmt, breitet sich das „Himmelsdenkmal“ im öffentlichen und privaten Raum aus.
